Iki is a Japanese word that when used in reference to design, is an expression of
simplicity, sophistication and originality. All qualities that are aesthetically pleasing.
My love of Japanese design began when I lived there in the early 1990s. The Kimono was central to this, evoking thoughts of Japan’s incredible beauty, history and traditions. The detail in the design, the cut of the fabric, the story and meaning of each original piece intrigued me. Part Art, part tradition. When my friend Tomoko took me to a specialised market to look at kimono fabrics she opened my eyes to another art-form. Over time, I have learnt about the different dying techniques, and methods in making each unique fabric. Originality.
‘How could I turn my love of unused Kimono silk fabrics into a product people could enjoy in their homes?’ A tentative suggestion to a classic-curtains co client turned into a proto-type. Incorporating kimono fabrics into the project was a successful experiment, and proved to be all the encouragement I needed to pursue Iki. Upcycling vintage kimono fabrics into simple functional pieces felt like a way of elevating these beautiful fabrics to every-day use. Every kimono silk fabric is individually selected to be the centrepiece, with Iki products showcasing the fabric in a simple design. As an advocate of quality natural fabrics, art and design I hope to bring the sophistication of the Kimono into peoples homes. Sophistication and Simplicity.
Wether the Iki cushion be for your home, a friend or gift I hope it creates wonder and joy! Kellie
